Bersih 2.0 organizer called up for questioning by Singapore police
The organizer of Bersih 2.0 Singapore Mr Teoh C P, a Malaysian holding Singapore PR, has been called by the police for questioning on Wednesday.
Bersih 2.0 Singapore held a ‘yellow picnic gathering’ at Hong Lim Park last Saturday in solidarity with the Bersih demonstration in Kuala Lumpur.
Nearly 200 Malaysians turned up in yellow for the event which is largely peaceful. There were no shouting of slogans or display of any placards or banners.
Mr Teoh said he had initially obtained the permission from the neigbhorhood police post next to the park to hold the event provided that no speeches were made. He was therefore shocked when he was called up for questioning by police from the Central Police Division.
During the interrogation, Mr Teoh was told that the outdoor gathering is illegal and warned not to hold similar events in the future.
The state media quoted a police spokesperson as saying that Mr Teoh was ‘advised’ on the rules governing the use of Speakers’ Corner.
The spokesman said the police take a ’serious view of foreigners who import their domestic political conflicts into Singapore, and of foreigners who use Singapore as a stage for such political agitation’.
Similar Bersih 2.0 events have been held in more than 20 cities worldwide without a glitch. In Melbourne, more than 3,000 Malaysians turned up to ask for free and fair elections in Malaysia.
