As Taxpayers, we have the right to say enough is enough, of squandering our money…………..
Poll: 96 percent want Lee Kuan Yew to pay for his own additional ’staff support’
The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement two days ago explaining why the duo still had press secretaries and assistants working for them from its office when they no longer hold any positions in the Singapore cabinet.
“Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has decided that former Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Emeritus Senior Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong will be provided staff support by the government. Each will have one special assistant and one press secretary part-time, plus one secretary and two clerical officers full-time to enable them to carry out official work when called upon by the government as well as their duties as senior advisors to GIC and MAS respectively.”
The explanation does not go down too well with netizens who questioned the rationale for using taxpayers’ monies to pay for ’staff support’ for backbencher MPs when they are entitled to $1,000 to employ their own personal assistants.
Marc Tan wrote:
“What official work are they on ? Haven’t they stepped down from cabinet ? If they want to do anymore jobs outside their MP scope, it shall be literally freelance or else called upon other MINISTERS.”
Wong Keen Foong added:
“If they want a secretary, they can have one each, paid from their own pockets and not paid using the taxpayers’ money.”
Law Sin Ling asked if taxpayers’ monies are used to paid for their overseas trips as well:
“When these two men engage in “travel overseas to meet leaders, engage investors, and speak at conferences”, they do so with their entourage in a capacity which is not equivalent to the level of state representatives under their last appointments. The two men should pay for the service of their ancillary personnel through their own pocket, and be seen to be doing so. Failure to adhere to proper protocol of political conduct shall render the PAP government liable to public accusation of corruption through the abuse of state privilege.”

The PMO should come clean on the exact cost incurred by the state in the provision of additional ’staff support’ as well as ’security cover’ for Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong and let Singaporeans decide if it is indeed money well spent.
